ABOUT THE PROJECT

Australia’s First Soccer Field Installed with 100% Recycled Infill

The recycled field was located at Rowville Secondary College, a state-funded secondary school in southeast Victoria. The heavily used soccer field supports student sport during school hours and community clubs after hours, making it critical local infrastructure.

Funded by the Victorian School Building Authority, the project saw Tuff Turf install the new field and engage RE4ORM for uplift, recycling, and the supply of recycled infill.

The result marked a milestone for Australian turf recycling – one of the first soccer fields recycled in Victoria, with the new surface installed using 100% recycled infill, demonstrating true circularity within a government-funded school project.

The Challenge

While the uplift itself was relatively straightforward, the project presented a number of practical and strategic challenges.

  • Early-stage soccer recycling project for RE4ORM
  • Heavy, rubber-rich turf system, increasing handling and transport weight
  • Tight residential access, with limited truck movement options
  • Active school environment, requiring all works to occur during term time
  • Neighbour and community management, typical of suburban school sites
  • Second-ever use of truck-based transport on a RE4ORM project

The Solution

Closing the Loop at Field Level

A true end-to-end recycling and reuse partnership with Tuff Turf, extending well beyond standard uplift to deliver a fully circular outcome.
RE4ORM synthetic turf recycling – A hand-drawn black circular arrow, reminiscent of the energy at Kareela Oval sports ground, with two arrowheads—one at the top right curving down and one at the bottom left curving up—forms a continuous loop on a white background.

Complete Field Recovery

Delivered full uplift, transport, and recycling of the end-of-life soccer field.

RE4ORM synthetic turf recycling – Four simple black shapes on a white background: a circle, a square, a rounded-corner square, and an upside-down triangle arranged in a 2x2 grid.

Suburban Logistics Execution

Proved efficient truck-based transport within tight residential site conditions.

RE4ORM synthetic turf recycling – A simple line drawing of a factory with a gear-like roof and a rectangular door, featuring a circular arrow symbol on the building—much like how Kareela Oval is central to Kareela’s cycle of activity as a vibrant local sports ground.

Recycled Sand Supply

Supplied 198 tonnes of recycled sand as stabilising infill for the new field.

RE4ORM synthetic turf recycling – Three black lines—one wavy, one with connected semicircles, and one with circles—symbolise the cycle of recycling benefits and highlight a positive environmental impact on a clean, white background.

Recycled SBR Supply

Supplied 39.2 tonnes of recycled SBR as performance infill.

Installation Alignment

Coordinated closely with Tuff Turf to align recycled outputs with installation timelines.
